Recorded in a small studio in East Hollywood with longtime collaborator James Ford behind the mixing console, Arctic Monekys' fifth opus was recorded in their adopted home of Los Angeles and takes the best elements of their two previous albums and gives them a fresh new twist.

Arctic Monkeys' fifth album AM was released on September 9, 2013. The album was produced by James Ford and co-produced by Ross Orton. It was recorded at Sage & Sound Recording in Los Angeles and Rancho De La Luna in Joshua Tree, California. The first single from the album, the track "Do I Wanna Know?", was released on June 18, 2013. The second single, "Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?", was released on August 19, 2013. The third single, "One for the Road", was released on December 16, 2013. AM has received praising reviews from music critics. On Metacritic, which assigns a standardized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 85, indicating "universal acclaim" based on 36 reviews.Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic called the album "a sleek, sexy and stylish collection of modern rock 'n' roll that confirms Arctic Monkeys as one of the most important bands of the 21st century". Matt Wilkinson of NME praised the album as "a record that sounds like it was made by a band that has finally accepted its place in the world".
