The live recordings result in extremely different products from electromagnetic sonic kitchens: most end up in the trash as cassette waste as soon as they are made, some are traded like conspiratorially traded bootlegs in the enthusiastically shaking hands of collectors after the careers of the big names have ended. Few of them retain the deep spirit and pure enthusiasm that no arranger or sound engineer can conjure up in the studio. Aretha Franklin's guest appearance at the Fillmore West, the legendary West Coast rock palace that closed its doors soon after, rises even higher. Everyone knew who was coming, and yet for those three nights in the spring of 1971, everything was different: instead of the show band that had stayed in Detroit, King Curtis And The Kingpins, one of the strongest bands far and wide, took the stage, accompanied by top hitters Cornel Dupree (g) and Bernard Purdie (dr). In the background, the mighty horn section of the Memphis Horns whistled to dizzying heights. Billy Preston on organ let the spiritual tension flow from his fingers and Ray Charles, who was conspicuously absent from the audience during one of the evenings, also appeared with the aptly titled "Spirit In The Dark". Not much comment is needed on the heroine on the cover. After all, without the excellent albums of the late 1960s, Aretha Franklin would not have been elevated to the country's first soul sister, nor would she have been called to the Fillmore. Recorded: February 1975 live at the Fillmore West, San Francisco, Ray Thompson Produced by Jerry Wexler and Arif Mardin Review: "Soulful music from a serious musician - that's what's missing today!" (Good Times, April/May 2014) "There are nearly 100 reissues and new editions of this super record - this one in a gatefold sleeve is tops in every respect." (Audio, July 2014)
