Around the Fur is the second studio album by American alternative metal band Deftones , released on October 28, 1997 by Maverick Records. The album was recorded at The Plant Recording Studios in Sausalito, California and was produced by Terry Date. The album's title track was released as a single on October 14, 1997. The album Around the Fur charted at number 29 on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipping one million copies in the United States. On the album, the band continued to evolve their sound from their more nu-metal oriented debut album Adrenaline (1995), placing more emphasis on melody and atmosphere. Around the Fur features greater use of keyboards, programming and acoustic guitar and has been described as "a darker and more atmospheric album than its predecessor". The album's lyrics were written by singer Chino Moreno about personal experiences and topics such as drugs, relationships and violence. The album Around the Fur received positive reviews from music critics. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic called it "a huge leap from the band's already impressive debut" and "a groundbreaking album for the alt-metal genre", while David Entertainment Weekly called it "big news".
