At a certain time in Dexter Gordon's (tenorsaxophone) life - when he was deeply addicted to drugs - the artist miraculously managed to resume his career in late 1955. After several years out of the spotlight, Gordon reappeared on the Big Apple-based independent label Bethlehem, where he and a half-dozen partners recorded the album Daddy Plays The Horn (1956). Although the support team provides Gordon with first-rate contributions throughout, it is undoubtedly Drew who has the most active interaction; his importance cannot be overstated. Nowhere is this more evident than in the friendly interplay we hear in the opening track, the title track, "Daddy Plays The Horn," which was written by Gordon. It could even be argued that Drew supports the tenor to the extent that he could be called a co-leader. The new version of Charlie Parker's bop standard "Confirmation" is played at a quiet medium tempo, giving all the musicians plenty of room to play on their own without interfering with the melody. Gordon seems noticeably more relaxed and comfortable as he plays more and more inspired improvisations. And again, it's nice to hear Drew take the lead of the backing musicians for a short period of time. The songs on "Daddy Plays The Horn" are simply great and stand on their own as simple, emotional statements. "Darn That Dream" contains the warmth of Gordon's tenor, while his sultry style leaves Drew plenty of room to fill in the blanks with his own unexciting and stylish sounds. The usually derided "number four" is anything but ordinary. This Gordon original soars right from the start, and the set kicks off with equally solid little improvisations that punctuate his laid-back playing. Drew takes the lead, doesn't slacken in pace and reveals what could be his most distinctive contribution to date. The same can be said of bassist Vinnegar, who gets a brief reprieve for a quick (overly economical) solo. "Autumn In New York" - another essential track on this album - proves that Gordon has retained his unique and rare sense of lyricism despite his addiction. It's rare for an entry in the Great American Songbook to be so distinctive. The seamless transitions between Gordon and Drew are further evidence of their undeniable connection. "You Can Depend On Me," which could be considered the best example of the musicians flexing their bebop muscles, brings everything to a decisive close. Recorded: September 1955 in Hollywood, California.
