The album was recorded between January and May 2007 at Avatar Studios in New York City. It is the first Dream Theater album to feature drummer Mike Mangini, who replaced founding member Mike Portnoy in May 2010. The album was met with mixed reviews from music critics. Some praised Mangini's performance and the band's return to a heavier sound, while others criticized the album's length and lack of innovation. It debuted at number 19 on the Billboard 200 chart and sold about 24,000 copies in its first week. Since then, the album has received a gold certificate from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipping more than 500,000 copies in the United States.
