It was produced by Nicky Ryan and his wife Roma Ryan and features Enya' vocals and instrumental arrangements of traditional Celtic and new age music. The album was commercially successful, ranking at number two on the UK Albums Chart and number one on the US Billboard New Age Albums chart. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) awarded it a platinum record for shipping one million copies in the United States. The lead single from the album, "Orinoco Flow", became a commercial success and charted at number eight on the UK Singles Chart and number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart. "Watermark" was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best New Album at the 31st Annual Grammy Awards.
