There are many recordings of the Well-Tempered Clavier - there is perhaps no major pianist or pianist who has not tackled this reference work at some point in his or her career. What sets this recording apart from others is the use of lute movement. The lute clavicymbel resembles a harpsichord. However, the strings are not metal but (double) gut strings. This makes the lute piano sound softer than the harpsichord. Supposedly, there were also combinations of two gut-string stops and one metal stop. And the body looks a bit exotic because it's shaped like a giant recumbent lute. Johann Sebastian Bach owned two such instruments, which were probably used for domestic music-making, like the clavichord, because they had a soft and relatively quiet sound. Although there are various references to this instrument in the literature, no original lute-piano has survived. For this recording, John Paul used a 1998 replica made by Anden Houben with a pitch of 392 Hz.
