Just as Liverpool named its airport after John Lennon, New Orleans' gateway to heaven is named after another musical great. Louis Armstrong, like the aforementioned Beatles, put his hometown firmly on the map, and his legacy will be heard and appreciated as long as music is played. No matter where someone flies into New Orleans from in the world, the name Louis Armstrong is known, revered and respected. Here's a selection of his best songs that clearly show why that's the case.

After World War II ended and swing orchestras were pushed by the support of the troops, the jazz world began to change fundamentally. New currents from Harlem and 52nd Street popularized bebop, but Armstrong remained the old lion of the traditional style. His 1949 song "Blueberry Hill" put him on the American charts and on the cover of Time magazine. Even the critical readers of the acclaimed scenic magazine Down Beat took a liking to him, and in 1952 voted him "the most important musical personality of all time." On the one hand, Satchmo became a leading figure in New Orleans revival, on the other hand, he managed to maintain his artistic integrity with albums he released with, for example, Ella Fitzgerald ("Ella & Louis", 1956) and Oscar Peterson ("LA meets OP", 1957). He made guest appearances at the Newport Festival in 1957 and 1958, topped the charts with hits such as "Hello Dolly" (1964) and "What A Wonderful World" (1968), and despite several heart failures in 1959, 1968, and the spring of 1971, remained almost continuously active. Louis Armstrong died in his sleep in New York City on July 6, 1971. Along with him, one of jazz's most important integrators and mentors, whose person and work continue to fascinate people around the world today, said goodbye to the stage.
