This classic recording of "Midnight Love" is Gaye's last great gift. In his Belgian exile in the seaside town of Oostende, Marvin borrowed a beat from the European new wave scene, but under his hands it became something entirely new. On the anniversary edition of "Midnight Love," Gaye took his cue from Rick James, Cameo and Prince to compose "Midnight Lady," a supple funk ode to luxurious nightlife, dashing supergirls and sexual debauchery. On "Third World Girl," he shows his love for the recently deceased Bob Marley, interweaving faux reggae rhythms with shimmering synth-pop tones. "Midnight Love" is a ripple in a sea of masterpieces from the legendary master of soul.

"Midnight Love" was Marvin Gaye's last album, released in 1982 after a long exile in Ostend, Belgium. Full of harmonies and sensuality, propulsive and funky, Midnight Love became his final chorus after Gaye had gone through a difficult time breaking out of the mainstream and discovering where he really belonged. It's safe to say that his place is in the studio. He wrote all the songs on "Midnight Love" himself, which resulted in his uber-hit "Sexual Healing." Gaye was a creative genius and a skilled multi-instrumentalist who played every instrument except guitar on this song. We can only speculate what Gaye would have come up with later if his father hadn't shot him just 18 months later.
