This album sets new standards in the rock and metal genre, which even those who had nothing to do with NIGHTWISH before will realize after listening to "Dark Passion Play". While 2004's "Once" was already a real hit in terms of sophistication, bombast and richness of detail, the new album manages the incredible: to go even further! In just over an hour of playing time, legendary anthems such as the epic, almost 14-minute goosebump-inducing "The Poet And The Pendulum", typical NIGHTWISH thrashers with a succinct chorus like "Amaranth", delicate, vulnerable ballads like "Eve" or even fat thrash planks (!) - to be heard in "Master Passion Greed". New frontwoman Anette Olzon proves to be a real boon, as she brings a new and modern wind to NIGHTWISH's structure with her fresh voice, departing from the operatic style championed by former singer Tarja Turunen. Once again accompanied by the great London Symphony Orchestra under the direction of old master Pip Williams, the result is an incredibly mature and haunting album that easily outshines even the great Hollywood soundtracks with its passion, big emotions and incredible perfectionism.
