Product information: In 1981 Philip Glass began working on the music for Godfrey Reggio's film Koyaanisqatsi. One of three collaborations with the director (Powaqqatsi and Anima Mundi followed), the complete score for Koyaanisqatsi was first released in its entirety and in full digital sound by Nonesuch Records in 1998, 15 years after its original release. The recording, produced by Kurt Munkacsi and co-produced by the Philip Glass Ensemble, contains approximately 30 minutes of previously unreleased material. Koyaanisqatsi means "life out of balance" in the Hopi language (the Uto-Aztecan language of the Pueblo people of northeastern Arizona). This 87-minute film is devoid of dialogue and narrative structure and was intended in part as an indictment of late 20th century Western society. Through a collage of images ranging from clouds chasing clouds across the Mexican desert to crowds swarming at Grand Central Station, Koyaanisqatsi allows viewers to experience the acceleration and condensation of contemporary society and invites reflection on the effects of technology and progress in the modern world. The original release of Glass's score for Koyaanisqatsi in 1983, which won the Golden Globe for Best Music, came at a time when the music industry was changing: the era of the LP record was coming to an end, heralding the advent of the CD. Because the LP record was still the most popular medium, the music for Koyaanisqatsi was radically shortened to accommodate the limited capacity of the LP record, which could hold a maximum of 25 minutes per side. Nonesuch's 1998 recording presents Koyaanisqatsi as a full-length concert work of over 70 minutes, featuring many of Glass's compositional innovations that served as his trademark for decades to come. "Since its premiere in 1983, Koyaanisqatsi has achieved the status of a modern film classic," Glass said at the time of the CD's release. "I'm pleased that with this recording, essentially the entire score is finally available. Godfrey and I worked for three years to put together the picture and music for Koyaanisqatsi. It is a collaboration of film and music that is unparalleled in its intensity."
