The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is the debut album by English rock band Pink Floyd , released on 5 August 1967. The album was recorded at London's Abbey Road Studios over a period of seven months, from January to July 1967. The album was produced by Pink Floyd founder Syd Barrett and engineered by Norman Smith. The album's title is taken from Kenneth Grahame's book The Wind in the Willows. The album title was coined by Barrett after reading the book and the lyrics were written by Barrett, Roger Waters and David Gilmour. The album cover was designed by Hipgnosis and features a surrealist painting by Barrett. The Piper at the Gates of Dawn was well received by critics and reached number six in the UK album chart. The album was awarded a gold certificate by the British Phonographic Industry and appeared in several lists of the best albums of all time.
