The classic 1968 Beatles animated film "Yellow Submarine" has been digitally restored and will be released on Blu-ray and DVD. The film's soundtrack will be released on CD on the same day. The film, which is currently unavailable in stores, has been restored for the first time in 4K digital resolution by Paul Rutan Jr. and his team of specialists from Triage Motion Picture Services and Eque Inc. Because the original artwork was hand-drawn, it required special care; therefore, automated software could not be used to digitally clean the restored photochemical elements of the film. Each individual image had to be edited by hand. "Yellow Submarine" was written by Lee Minoff, Al Brodax, Jack Mendelsohn, and Erich Segal, directed by George Dunning, and its development into a feature film was begun by Brodax, who had previously produced nearly 40 episodes of the Beatles animated series for ABC television, when he pitched his extraordinary vision for a feature-length animated film to Beatles manager Brian Epstein. Based on songs by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, the film is an imaginative story full of peace, love and hope, sentiments expressed in Beatles songs such as "Eleanor Rigby," "When I'm Sixty-Four," "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds," "All You Need Is Love" and "It's All Too Much." When the film was first released in 1968, it was immediately hailed as a groundbreaking artistic achievement that revolutionised the genre by combining the informal approaches of the time with innovative animation. The film is infused with the latest artistic trends of the young generation of the time, such as the garish Pop Art paintings of Andy Warhol, Martin Sharp, Alan Aldridge and Peter Blake. Heinz Edelmann, responsible for art direction and set design, created an animation classic with "Yellow Submarine" - backed by the creative minds of Robert Balser and Jack Stokes (animation directors) and their team of cartoonists and technical artists. "From the beginning, I thought the film would consist of a series of successive short episodes," recalls Edelmann. "Every five minutes or so, a new style would emerge that would keep the interest until the end of the film." These styles included mixing live-action photography with cartoon material, three-dimensional sequences, and what was known as kaleidoscopic "rotoscoping," in which filmed material was transferred frame by frame into drawings. The entire production took almost two years, involving 14 different scripts, 40 cartoonists and 140 technical artists. The result was triumphant and marked a milestone in the history of animation. Review , "Now Yellow Submarine (...) has been digitally updated." (musikexpress, August 2012)
