In May 1980, The Cure released arguably their most minimalist album, Seventeen Seconds. Although the album is initially somewhat difficult to approach, its hidden depths only become apparent after repeated listens. Since then, the hidden and sometimes somewhat difficult approach have been considered hallmarks of the band's sound. At the beginning of the recording of Seventeen Seconds, The Cure replaced their bassist. Michael Dempsey was replaced by Simon Gallup, whose bass playing was to change and shape the whole atmosphere of the music. The band had found their signature sound that made them famous around the world.

Of all the bands that followed punk rock in the late seventies, few proved as enduring and popular as The Cure.
At first, The Cure played edgy pop songs, but gradually their songs became more structured. The Cure, one of the bands at the birth of gothic rock, layered guitars and synths, but by the time gothic finally took hold in the '80s, The Cure had long since moved on to new things.
The album 'Seventeen Seconds' was recorded and mixed in seven days on a budget of around £3,000; the band were spending 16 or 17 hours a day in the studio back then just to fit the budget. "Seventeen Seconds" is the album where The Cure abandon their influences and become a band in their own right, from short instrumental tracks to robotic pop.
