Doors vměstnali do pouhých pěti let existence kapely několik životů a koncem roku 1970 hrozilo, že psychická zátěž způsobená závislostí Jima Morrisona a jeho problémy se zákonem skupinu přemůže. Každý pokus o natočení alba za těchto podmínek měl skončit katastrofou, ale na L.A. Woman - poslední desce Doors vydané za Morrisonova života - kapela uspěla téměř navzdory sobě samé. Album, které si sami produkovali a nahrávali ve své soukromé zkušebně, bylo návratem domů v hudebním i duchovním smyslu. "Naše poslední deska se stala stejnou jako naše první album: syrová a jednoduchá," uvažoval bubeník John Densmore ve své autobiografii. "Bylo to, jako bychom uzavřeli kruh. Byli jsme opět garážovou kapelou, kde rock & roll začal."

V době, kdy se připravovaly závěrečné mixy, se Morrison vydal na delší cestu do Paříže v naději, že ve městě světla znovu najde svou múzu. Nikdy se však neměl vrátit: Zpěvák tam v červenci 1971 zemřel.

A few months before Jim Morrison's death in Paris, L.A. Woman, the most blues-influenced album, was released. The most successful single was Love Her Madly, written by guitarist Robbie Krieger, whose girlfriend regularly threatened to leave him. According to Rolling Stone magazine, the song is composed of Chuck Berry's best riffs since the Stone days. The same magazine calls L.A. Woman the Doors' best album, including their debut. "A monument worthy of dancing in the streets." Doug Sax remastered the SACD from the original analog tapes, accompanied by Bruce Botnick, the Doors' producer and sound engineer. The original masters were compiled on a tape deck with a tube input stage, and a machine with a tube output stage was also used to play the tapes to be remastered. The basis for the surround sound were 96k/24bit files that Botnick mixed and mastered from the original analog masters for the audio DVD release on Perception. For the SACD discs, resampling to DSD (without filtering) was done with a Weiss Saracon converter. Review ,,Analogues Productions have released the sonically ultimate edition of Jim Morrison's band in a hybrid SACD format so that it can be played on regular players. The depth of sound is remarkable, as all instruments are now optimally spaced out without appearing separate, promising a new listening experience.
