Legendary rock band Rolling Stones releases a new edition of Beggars Banquet in honor of their 50th anniversary. The album will be released on November 16th. The original album was recorded between March and July 1968 at London's Olympic Sound Studios. It was the first record produced by Jimmy Miller and the last to feature the original Rolling Stones line-up of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts. "The Rolling Stones are back and so is rock'n'roll. They finished another album, which is their best yet. In all aspects, it's a great album and great rock'n'roll. No pretense, a major songwriting and musical achievement."-Jann Wenner, Rolling Stone, 1968Long after the album's release, legendary rock journalist and author Ben Fong-Torres hailed Beggars Banquet as an "instant master classic" that "speaks volumes about the chaos of '68. The album features, among other things, the most political song the Rolling Stones have ever released - Street Fighting Man. It was partly inspired by Jagger's first-hand experience of an anti-war demonstration outside the US embassy in London, where he heard activist Tariq Ali speak. At the same time, student protests were taking place in Paris, leading to the now-legendary May Day mass uprising and strike, in which nearly a quarter of the nation participated. "It was a strange time. Not just in France, but in America, because of the Vietnam War, the endless riots and violence. But it was good. After all, in France, they almost managed to overthrow the government," Jagger recounts the time of the record's creation in a 1997 interview with Rolling Stone. Another standout track from the record is the single Sympathy For The Devil, which was inspired by Mikhail Bulgakov's novel and tells the story of Satan's visit to Stalin's Soviet Union, and was originally intended to be a cover album that was rejected by both American and British labels. A photograph by Michael Voss, which shows a blackened wall with part of a toilet in the foreground, was deemed offensive. The album was therefore released in a sleeve that featured only the band name and the name Beggars Banquet in wedding font. After a few years, however, the record finally got its original cover.
