The album was recorded at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, California and produced by David Bottrill. The album's title is derived from the term undertow, which refers to the pulling power of a wave. The album was well received by music critics and was the first Tool album to reach number 138 on the Billboard 200 chart. The album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and sold more than 1.5 million copies in the United States. The album Undertow contains Tool 's first single, "Sober", which was released in February 1993. The song became a hit on rock radio and reached number one on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. A second single, "Prison Sex", was released in June 1993 and reached number 16 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. The album's third and final single, "Opiate", was released in January 1994 and reached number 34 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart.
