It is the last Uriah Heep work to feature John Lawton as lead vocalist. Most of the writing credit goes to Ken Hensley. The cover art is by artist Chris Achilleos, who also contributed to the album "Lovehunter" by Whitesnake.

It was the band's first album with new singer John Lawton replacing David Byron. The album's title track was released as a single in May 1978 and reached number 49 in the UK Singles Chart. The album Fallen Angel was well received by music critics. In a review for AllMusic, critic Eduardo Rivadavia called it "one of the band's most consistent and inspiring albums". The album was remastered and re-released by Sanctuary Records in 2006.
