It was the band's first album with new singer John Lawton replacing David Byron. The album's title track was released as a single in May 1977 and reached number 49 in the UK Singles Chart. In a retrospective review, AllMusic critic Eduardo Rivadavia awarded the album three stars out of five, stating, "Innocent Victim is a transitional album for Uriah Heep and therefore not as consistent as some of their earlier or later efforts. However, it boasts some great songs, including the title track 'Stealin' and the epic 'Lady in Black'".
