Influential American Alternative Rock Band

R.E.M. was an American rock band formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1980 by drummer Bill Berry, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills, and lead vocalist Michael Stipe. Renowned for their alternative rock sound, they were pivotal in the development and popularization of the genre throughout the 1980s and 1990s. R.E.M. released their debut album, "Murmur," in 1983 to critical acclaim, setting the tone for their future success. They achieved mainstream fame with the release of their sixth album, "Green," in 1988 and continued to build on this with subsequent releases such as "Out of Time" in 1991, which included hits like "Losing My Religion" and "Shiny Happy People." The following year, they released "Automatic for the People," which is often considered one of their best works, featuring timeless tracks like "Everybody Hurts" and "Man on the Moon."
