It often overlaps with the related genre of shoegaze, and the two genre terms have sometimes been used interchangeably. The genre came to prominence in the 1980s through the work of the Cocteau Twins, A.R. Kane and their contemporaries. Groups such as My Bloody Valentine, Galaxie 500, Lush and Mazzy Star would release major albums in the same style. Ambient pop evolved in the 1990s as a variant of dream pop that incorporated electronic production and textures.
